What does Branding & Identity Design cover?

Logos, color, type, and the rules that keep them consistent everywhere your business appears.

What is Brand equity?

The commercial value of being known and trusted — the reason a customer calls you instead of the cheaper unknown option. It is the asset you put at risk when you change a name or logo people already recognize.

B

Brand equity

The commercial value of being known and trusted — the reason a customer calls you instead of the cheaper unknown option. It is the asset you put at risk when you change a name or logo people already recognize.

In practice It is also why “nobody knows what our logo means” is rarely a real problem. Recognition does the work; meaning is a bonus.

Brand Refresh

Brand guidelines

The document specifying exactly how your identity gets used — color values, clear space, minimum sizes, and what not to do. It is what keeps a sign shop, a printer, and a web developer producing the same brand without you refereeing.

In practice Its real value shows up the third time you hire someone. Without it, every new vendor reinvents your brand slightly and the drift compounds.

Logo & Brand Identity

Brand identity

The complete visual and verbal system that makes your business recognizable — logo, colors, type, photography, and tone of voice working together. The logo is one component of it, not the whole thing.

In practice The test is whether someone could identify your business from a truck door, an invoice, and a Facebook post with the name covered up.

Logo & Brand Identity

Brand refresh

Modernizing an existing identity — cleaning up the logo, tightening the palette, fixing the type — while keeping what customers already recognize. Distinct from a rebrand, which deliberately discards that recognition.

In practice A twenty-year-old business with a dated logo usually wants a refresh, not a rebrand. The recognition is an asset you paid two decades for.

Brand Refresh

C

CMYK

The cyan-magenta-yellow-black ink model used in full-color printing. Its range is narrower than RGB, so bright screen colors reliably print duller.

In practice Which is why you approve a printed proof rather than a monitor. Every monitor in the building is showing you a color the press cannot make.

Business Cards & Print Collateral

Color palette

The defined set of colors your brand uses, with exact values for screen and for print. A real palette includes neutrals and a rule for which color does what — not just three colors somebody liked.

In practice Without a rule for hierarchy, every designer applies your colors differently and the brand looks unstable across a website, a wrap, and a shirt.

Logo & Brand Identity

F

Favicon

The tiny icon shown on a browser tab and in bookmarks. It has to read clearly at 16 pixels, which almost always means a simplified mark rather than your full logo shrunk down.

In practice A full logo reduced to favicon size becomes an unreadable smudge. This is one of the specific jobs the icon-only logo variant exists to do.

Logo & Brand Identity

H

Hex code

A six-character code such as #0CBFAA that specifies an exact color on screen. It is the value to hand any web developer.

In practice “Our teal” is not a specification. A hex code is, and it is the difference between a consistent brand and five nearly-matching greens.

L

Logo variant

An alternate arrangement of your logo built for a specific space — stacked, horizontal, icon-only, single-color, reversed. You need all of them, because a logo designed for a website header will not survive being embroidered on a hat.

In practice A proper identity package delivers every variant in vector format up front. Being handed one PNG is how you end up paying a sign shop to redraw your own logo.

Logo & Brand Identity

P

Pantone / PMS matching

Specifying a color as a pre-mixed standardized ink rather than a blend of process inks. It is how a logo stays the same color across a vehicle wrap, a printed brochure, and an embroidered shirt made by three different vendors.

In practice This is the field on your brand guidelines that stops your blue drifting toward purple every time a new supplier prints something.

Logo & Brand Identity

R

RGB

The red-green-blue color model used by anything that emits light — screens, phones, LED signs. Colors are mixed by adding light, which is why RGB can produce vivid values no printer can reproduce.

In practice This is the root of “why does it look different printed.” The screen is making color with light; the press is making it with ink.

T

Typography pairing

Choosing a small set of typefaces that work together — typically one for headlines and one for body text. Two well-chosen faces used consistently read as more professional than six used freely.

In practice Font choice is also a performance decision. Self-hosted fonts load faster and avoid a third-party request on every page view.

Logo & Brand Identity

W

Wordmark vs. logomark

A wordmark is your name set as the logo; a logomark is the symbol that works without the name. New businesses need the wordmark doing the heavy lifting, because a symbol only carries meaning once people already know you.

In practice Apple earned the right to drop its name over decades. A new marine service company that leads with an abstract mark is spending money to be unrecognizable.
