What salt and shade do to signage on Pine Knoll Shores
This island takes salt from both sides — ocean to the south, Bogue Sound to the north — and then a good part of the town sits under a maritime canopy that keeps everything damp and shaded. That combination is harder on printed material than open beachfront is. Vinyl that would be fine baking in full sun on a mainland lot instead stays wet, holds mildew along the edges, and lifts. Painted signage under live oaks collects sap and grows a film. Low light flattens color as well, so a mark that reads clean in the sun can go muddy in the shade of a driveway here. We spec around it: laminated vinyl, higher contrast, fewer hairline strokes, finishes that can be wiped down instead of repainted. It is a different materials problem than the open strip a mile away.
