Bleed
Artwork extended past the final trim line so that normal cutting variance never leaves a white sliver at the edge. Commercial printing typically asks for 1/8 inch (3 mm) on every side; large-format work often wants more.
CMYK
The cyan-magenta-yellow-black ink model used in full-color printing. Its range is narrower than RGB, so bright screen colors reliably print duller.
Crop marks
Thin lines placed outside the artwork showing the press operator exactly where to trim. They sit in the bleed area and disappear when the piece is cut.
Preflight
The pre-production check of an art file — resolution, embedded or outlined fonts, color mode, bleed, and overprint settings. It is the step that catches the problem while it is still free to fix.
Proof
A sample provided for approval before the full run. A digital proof checks layout and spelling; only a physical proof tells you what the color will actually look like on that material.
Spot UV
A glossy clear coating applied to selected areas of a printed piece, usually over a matte finish. It adds tactile contrast — a logo that catches the light while the rest of the card stays flat.
