Staying Safe, Organized, and Backed Up

Before you start

Have both devices unlocked and in front of you.

This session is the insurance policy and the locked toolbox, not a new tool. None of this needs daily thought — it just needs to be set up once and checked on occasionally.

Walk-through

1. Face ID / passcode. Settings → Face ID & Passcode. Confirm it’s turned on. This is the lock on the toolbox — if the phone is ever lost, whoever finds it can’t get into your messages, photos, or accounts.
2. Find My. Settings → your name → Find My. Confirm “Find My iPhone” / “Find My iPad” and “Send Last Location” are on. From any web browser, you could see exactly where a lost device is, lock it remotely, or erase it if it’s truly gone.
3. Automatic backups. Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup. Confirm it’s on and check the “last backup” date. Overnight, while charging and on Wi-Fi, it quietly saves a full copy of everything — a lost, broken, or replaced device is an inconvenience, not a disaster.
4. Software updates. Settings → General → Software Update. These mostly patch security holes — like replacing a worn lock — and it’s fine to let the phone install them overnight.
5. Storage running low. Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Notice what a near-full bar looks like versus healthy, and that the phone suggests what to clear (usually large videos) if it ever gets tight.

Try it together

• Confirm Find My is on for both devices.
• Find the date of the last iCloud backup on both devices.

• Nothing new to practice — this is the session where “leave it alone and let it work” is the correct habit.
